After living in the U.S. for more than a decade I’ve started to call this place home. But every time I hear of or come in contact with something from Colombia, my heart still skips a beat.
It was Monday, I was at the office trying to get some work done but Facebook wasn’t helping. I had a battle of the wills and had just decided to close my browser window when I came across a post:
There were three things that caught my eye.
1. It would be Ephniko’s DC debut, and he happened to be Colombian.
2. “Kings of Tropicaliente”… that really sounds like a party!!! Well that’s what I thought (and let me tell you, I wasn’t too far off).
3. The event was happening at Tropicalia, which has become one of my favorite venues. It’s a very intimate venue, with an awesome light and sound system, and has really good service.
Once I saw the post, all my efforts on getting back to work were forgotten and I went straight to SoundCloud, YouTube and Spotify to check out Ephniko and Empresarios. I don’t really believe in coincidences, but, I sure was thankful for seeing the post because the Monday blues were suddenly gone and I was all hyped up and dancing in my seat with the sounds of Colombia and DC.
Ephniko is a bilingual, singer/songwriter and MC who lives in Miami, originally from Barranquilla, Colombia. He describes his music as “Global Hip Hop”. He first came into contact with Empresarios when they were collaborating on a track together. They had such rich chemistry that they decided to expand their collaboration and put together an East Coast tour together (they also visited New Hampshire, New York City, and Pennsylvania).

Empresarios, the self-proclaimed “Kings of Tropicaliente,” are a local band, and believe me there’s a reason for that title! The current band members are:
Javier Miranda – Percussion
Frankie Rosado – Vocals
Felix Perez – Vocals
Paul Chaconas – Guitar/Melodica
Anthony Gary – Drums
John Bowen – Video/Effects
Sonny Cheeba – DJ/Producer
Arsam Khosh – DJ/Producer

Let me tell you, since they first appeared on the stage, people were pretty excited and ready to have a great time. Their rhythms and energy are a guaranteed good time. Empresarios have a special “Vibe” that makes everyone want to dance and sing along to their catchy tropicaliente songs. I still can’t get them out of my head, and I love that.
Personally, I’m more of a rockero myself, but their type of music is fun and very enjoyable. Like I said, it was my first time seeing the band, and I can’t wait to see them again. Hopefully they’ll play in another intimate venue soon.
Sadly, the show ran late and since I was on metro I wasn’t able to stay to watch Ephniko perform. However, judging from what I heard at the sound check, and from what I heard of his music online, I’m sure everybody there had a great time. I can’t wait to see him again.
Keep your eyes open, and look for them on Facebook. I believe they’re working on a new musical production and a lot of people are looking forward to it. Including me.
Check out this little mini-video with Empresarios and Ephniko sending some special Kesta shoutouts. Until next time!
