Welcome to "You Oughta Know"! In this series of blogs, I will highlight some of my favorite artists, groups, and movies that many of you may not know about. Open your mind and ears and let's get started!

Being born and raised in Puerto Rico, music has always been all around me.  My ties to music have deep roots and are a huge part of who I am today.  Reggae Roots is a style that although not many people talk about, it has a large following and impact into the musical scene in the island.  Bands like Cultura Profética, Los Goyos, and Gomba Jahbari are among the most well known groups in and out of the island.  However, there is one band that has opened the doors for these groups and is still standing strong today.  Their name is Millo Torres y el Tercer Planeta, their sound is Reggae Roots Latino and their legacy is alive and well.

Millo Torres Y el Tercer Planeta (MTTP) got their start in 1994 in the island of Puerto Rico.  After finishing his studies in the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Millo found a mutual passion for music with some friends who were also trained professional musicians.  He relocated back to Puerto Rico and united with them to create a fusion of genres that in the past had not had a successful outcome in the island’s music scene.  Fusing reggae, rock, ska, salsa, afro-caribbean rhythms, jazz and cuya as their base rhythm, the band grew a cult following within the Reggae Roots scene in the late 90s.

I clearly remember the first time I heard Millo's music.  The year was 1997, and I was in seventh grade. It was an early weekday morning, and I remember turning on the TV to the pay-per view music channel called "The Box" and hearing this Reggae-Ska music coming from the TV. I remember getting ready for school that morning when I first saw the video for "Oh Naná" and I couldn't keep the riff out of my head all day. From that morning on, I kept hoping someone would call in and pay the $2.00 to play the video and that's when I knew I had become a MTTP fan.

Time passed and MTTP became one of the most respected Reggae bands in the island, laying the foundation for many bands to follow.  Some of their most famous tracks include “Haciendo Tiempo“, "Cosas Buenas" ,“Me Gustas Como Quiera” and my personal favorite MTTP song “Caminando”, a song that is my guide to live life by.

Millo's sixth and most recent album titled "Sol" is available now.  The song “Todo Lo Que Traigo Es Amor” has been selected as the motion picture soundtrack for the Puerto Rican film "Broche De Oro", an accomplishment of high praise and honor. If you listen to Sol, be sure to check out "Paletiando", "Suave" and first single of the album "Vida Te Da."

It took me quite some time to finally see Millo live, but when I did it was a moment I will never forget.  It happened almost ten years after that fateful weekday morning, I was a senior in college finishing up my internship at a local TV station, and I was scheduled to interview Millo for a special. I had the chance to ask one of my favorite artists and biggest inspirations these questions I've had for years, and the result was nothing short of brilliant.  It was a coming of age for me, the day my young college student self became an adult.  I can honestly say it helped me develop a firm vision of my career path, it's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and that's when my journey truly began.  What turned out as an interview became a good friendship with the mind behind some of my most favorite words, sounds and melodies.

MTTP is music that fuels you with good vibes and energy to take life on and live it to the maximum.  Millo's music is about exploration, balance and positivity, three elements that have given me the tools to enjoy life and grow as an individual. Simply put, his music is what I like to call "Feel Good Music" and we could all use some more of that in our lives! Be sure to check out the catalogue available on Spotify and let me know which songs you like the most.

¡Saludos mi gente linda!
