El Centro DF Celebrates Summer with National Tequila Month!

In honor of National Tequila Month, El Centro DF is serving up some delicious tequila infused dishes and cocktails in July!

Why celebrate Tequila for one month only when you can enjoy year-round, am I right? If you've ever been to El Centro DF restaurant (at either the 14th street or Georgetown locations) you know that they do just that.

However, in honor National Tequila Month, El Centro is stepping up their already impressive 250 Tequila selection to include some special tequila drinks, tequila ceviches, signature dishes enhanced with tequila and tequila gelato during the month of July.

We recently had the chance to sample these dishes and cocktails and let me tell you, the blue agave plant drink has never tasted better.

After walking around Georgetown on a 90+ degree day, I asked the bartender for the most refreshing drink.  He pointed me to either the special pineapple-sage infused tequila margarita or the grapefruit-lime lemongrass infused margarita. Naturally I ordered both.

First was the pineapple sage number. Just when I thought this drink couldn't sound any more mouth-watering, I noticed the large jar of tequila with huge chunks of pineapple and sage sitting on the counter.  El Centro is known for infusing their 100% agave tequila with exotic flavors such as strawberry-basil, watermelon & cucumber, serrano, plum, as well as cranberry-orange zest. While I was prepared for something different, I wasn't prepared for the rapture. This margarita is a taste of summer.  The pineapple is sweet, the sage adds depth, and the house margarita mix is light and refreshing letting the tequila bask in the limelight.  It's a slippery slope though because you can easily drink 3 or 4 of these without batting an eyelash. More please!

The grapefruit lime lemongrass margarita was naturally much more puckery with a sour punch.  The grapefruit almost takes the backseat really allowing the punchiness of the tequila to sneak through.  While I was more of a fan of the pineapple margarita, the grapefruit version was a refreshing runner up!

At this point we were slightly tipsy hungry so we welcomed the sight of this beauty making its way around the room.

I introduce to you El Centro's Grilled Shrimp Ceviche....can you guess what the frozen float is made of? 

This appetizer was the star of the ball.  The grilled shrimp is marinated in a citrus-chile broth, along with some grapefruit, cucumber, jicama, red onion, and topped with a frozen margarita float. The only thing more refreshing and tasty than this dish are the gates of heaven opening up during the previous rapture moment you experienced with the pineapple margarita. 

Next we sampled a reposado tequila cured and smoked pork tenderloin topped with chile morita sauce, and served with "esquites" and poblano rojas-potato puree. The pork was definitely the star of the show having a distinct tequila flavor and staying incredibly moist.  I was especially happy to see this dish paired with what is considered to be Mexican "street food".  Esquites are a snack composed of corn that has been boiled or roasted and then sauteed in butter with onions, chopped chiles, epazote and salt.  This was also the perfect pairing to the cheesey poblano potato puree.

Next was dessert.

If tequila can be frozen into margaritas, why not make a tequila gelato? This particular tequila gelato is being churned by leading Gelato creator Robb Duncan of Dolcezza for this month-long celebration. The frozen treat is served on a house-made mexican chocolate waffle cone and topped with cajeta and berries or mint.  I myself was happy that the gelato tasted more like tequila and not too sugary.  The mint and Mexican chocolate cone were a very tasty companion and added texture to the creamy gelato.

Meet the Maker Dinners: Both El Centro D.F. locations will be offering Meet the Maker dinners on Monday, July 14th and Monday, July 21st allowing tequila aficionados the opportunity to meet representatives from the world’s leading tequila companies.  Seating is available from 6 PM to 8 PM.  Dinner begins with a private reception with passed hors d'oeuvres and tequila cocktails followed by a three-course dinner including ceviche, a signature entrée and dessert, all paired with tequila.  Guests will go home with a gift bag that includes an El Centro D.F. T-shirt. Meet the Maker dinners are priced at $69, and are limited to 50 guests at the 14th Street location and 32 guests at the Georgetown location.  Reservations can be made via Living Social at: https://www.livingsocial.com/cities/1-washington-d-c/deals/1167874-tequi....

Tequila Happy Hours: From July 1st-31st, the restaurant will be pouring the two new house-made tequila infusions: pineapple/sage and grapefruit/lime/lemongrass, which will be served as specials in addition to El Centro’s ten seasonal infusion flavors. These two new infusions can be served straight-up or with a splash of soda, and are priced at just $5 each. Guests can enjoy these drink specials for the month of July on Mondays during lunch and dinner service, and during happy hour every night of the festival from 5 PM to 7 PM.

National Tequila Month Party: On Monday, July 28th, fans of El Centro D.F. are invited to attend a National Tequila Month party in Georgetown or at 14th Street, from 5 PM to 8 PM.  The event is priced at $39 per person and tickets are available at: https://www.livingsocial.com/cities/1-washington-d-c/deals/1167874-tequi.... Guests will receive three drink tickets, and the opportunity to indulge in a variety of dishes on an extensive buffet  including Carnitas, Brisket and Nopal Tacos with molcajete, verde, and morita salsa, pico de gallo, crema and lettuce; Refried Beans; Mexican Rice; Chips with salsa and guacamole; Mini Chorizo Empanadas; Chicken Tinga Flautas; Mini Mushroom Quesadillas, as well as Mini Open-Face Tortas. Additionally, the restaurants will have DJs spinning music throughout the restaurant from 5 PM to close.  Regular dinner service will resume at both locations at 8 PM.
