A Win And A Loss For Barcelona
Submitted by xtina.cortes on Thu, 2011-12-15 10:35
After a 3-1 victory against longtime rival Real Madrid, FC Barcelona went into this morning’s FIFA Club World Cup game against Al-Saad with some confidence. If you were up at 5:30am this morning to watch the game, you had the opportunity to witness yet another great victory for the club. You also got to see a loss, though, that Pep and the rest of team will have to work around.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Shortly after a goal in the 25’ by Adriano, David Villa (7) had an awkward fall, which resulted in him being taken off the field in a stretcher and was later sent to Yokohama Rosa hospital in Yokohama, Japan. Barça continued playing and went on to rack up three more goals – another from Adriano, one from Keita, and one from Maxwell. By winning today’s match, they are now moving on to play in the championship game against Brazil’s Sanots, where star Neymar is guaranteed to bring his A-Game.
Unfortunately, Villa’s injury is much more serious than initially believed to be, and will not be rejoining Barcelona for that game. It has been announced that Villa sustained a fractured tibia, leaving him out for at least a six-month period. This comes at the most inopportune time as Barça has not only moved on in the FIFA Club World Cup, but Villa will also miss La Liga games. It is possible he may also miss playing in Spain’s upcoming games in Euro 2012, which leaves Spain without its leading goal scorer. Maybe most important of all, Villa will now miss out on next month’s transfer period in which it has been said a few EPL teams were planning to make a big for the 30 year old striker.
Coach Pep Guardiola spoke with the media following today’s game, saying “David has fractured his leg and will return to Barcelona for an operation as soon as possible.” He went on to comment on how Villa’s injury is a massive blow for the team and he will be missed.
Although Barcelona will be celebrating their win today, placing them in the Club World Cup championship game, worried thoughts of their friend and teammate David Villa will be in the back of their minds.

How I Became Another Girl in A Coma
Submitted by Rocksario on Tue, 2011-11-08 13:11
A lot of people ask me what kind of music describes Girl in a Coma, are they punk, are they Latin Rock? Do they sing in Spanish or English? And the ever so present question, how did I get so into them when they’re fairly unknown around the Washington Metropolitan area? Well fret no more friends all will be revealed in this blog.
I was introduced to Girl in A Coma or (GIAC), an all girl band from San Antonio, TX, by my friend Alicia who worked with them for a short while as their tour/merch manager. GIAC had just released their second album, “Trio B.C.” under Joan Jett’s record label Black Heart Records. They were playing a local all girl festival in Baltimore, an unknown band amongst local artists with a modest following. At the time I had no idea who GIAC were or what they looked like so I didn’t notice that while I watched the opening bands Nina Diaz (Lead Singer/Guitarist) and Jenn Alva (Bassist) were standing right next to me watching the show. Nina sipped on her water and shyly seemed to hide under a hoodie, while Jenn smiled at anyone who made eye contact with her (sooo friendly :P). Then when it was GIAC’s turn I saw both girls walk up to the stage to start setting up their instruments joined by Nina’s sister Phanie Diaz on drums. Shortly after that I heard the opening lyrics to “Say” and I was hooked as Nina belted out in a crisp clear punky voice, “Everyone will quote me on this line!” The rest of the crowd fell for them hook, line, and sinker no one moved from their spots for the remainder of the GIAC short set. Powerful, charismatic, raw girl power is what comes to mind when I recall my first time watching Girl in a Coma live. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them a few more times and to say they are great live is an understatement. Very few bands can recreate what they put down on a record and perform it with even more intensity for a live audience each and every night.
Girl in a Coma’s music also can’t be pigeonholed into one single genre. They are feminine rock personified. The variety of rhythms in their songs is truly outstanding. They can go from punk rock in, “Say” or “Clumsy Sky” (from their first album “Both Before I’m Gone”) and go straight into rockabilly ballads like “El Monte” or “BB” from Trio B.C. If you like sexy sultry you will absolutely LOVE their Patsy Cline cover of “Walking After Midnight” from “Adventures in Coverland”. This cover CD also features a magnificent take on the late Mexican-American singer Selena’s, Si Una Vez. GIAC transformed this song from tejano pop cumbia to a beautiful punk rock song that would make Selena proud.
Even after four studio albums and celebrating the recent release of “Exits and All The Rest”, GIAC loves visiting their local record store in San Antonio, only difference is now they are performing there and signing autographs for proud fans. GIAC is a loveable band, they’re like the sisters you never had (or do have but cooler, no offense). They started like many other bands jamming together during high school where Phanie Diaz and Jenn Alva met in art class and became best of friends over a mutual love for Morrissey, Nirvana, and all the rest. When Nina was only 13 she wanted to audition for the band as their singer and blew everyone away during her audition. Since then Nina has been the singer and songwriter for GIAC, while Phanie and Jenn are the glue that keep them together.
On GIAC’s website a press release reads, “the stamp San Antonio’s music scene has left on the band is all over the album and it’s stabs of punk, tejano, rockabilly, classic rock and roll, rancheras, indie rock and ballads all contributing to a sound that can only be described as Girl in a Coma.” I couldn’t agree more. This diversity and pure talent has resulted in superstars like Morrissey, Sia, Tegan and Sara, The Pogues and Amanda Palmer to have hand selected them for tours. In addition, Robert Rodriguez asked them to compose a song for the closing scene in his film Machete last year. Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction/Red Hot Chili Peppers) has openly professed that GIAC is his favorite band and we can’t confirm nor deny that he is caliente for Nina (although it’s mostly confirmed) you can check out the backstory here.
All said and done I’m just another Girl in a Coma. The Trio B.C and Adventures in Coverland is on constant rotate in my car’s CD Player and I’m holding out on buying Exits and All The Rest until tomorrow’s show so I can get it signed by the chicas. I will be there with my lively friends who witnessed their first GIAC show earlier this year and are now more Girls (and Boys) in a Coma. If you’re free tomorrow night don’t miss out on this great band performing 11/9 at DC9 1940 9th Street NW, with opening band the Coathangers, show starts 8pm, $10 adv /$12 door

Yep!
Submitted by e.flores on Mon, 2011-10-17 08:36Fall is here!
The leaves are changing, the weather is cooler, and my summer concert run has sadly ended. There are still some great shows happening like: Gianmarco on Oct. 20 @ The State, Henry Santos form Aventura on Oct. 28 at Cococabana and Hector Acosta "El Torito" on Nov. 4 at Cococabana. Just another reason why you should "Like" Kesta.
My morning commute to work got me thinking back to all the great shows I've seen in the last 7 months; beginning with Juanes at the Patriot Center in April and ending with Vilma Palma at Jaxx in September. Along the journey, I got the opportunity to see Diego Torres, Maná and Molotov but somehow, this morning all I could hear in my mind was ¿Y ahora qué hacemos? by Jarabe de Palo.
Maybe it's the relaxed and chill vibe the song has. Maybe it's the magic that fall brings, or maybe the day is just perfect for being outside or driving down winding roads with the windows down and listening to this song. Regardless, I am declaring that Jarabe de Palo has been my favorite show this summer. Having the chance to see them up close and in such a great venue like The State Theater, was an amazing experience.

What's next for me? Well, easy!
- Julieta Venegas at The State Theater on November 8
- Foo Fighters at the Verizon Center on November 11
- Three Doors Down at DAR Constitution Hall on November 13
- The Green at 8x10 on November 18 (if you haven't heard this band before, definitely give them a listen! Amazing reggae from Hawaii)

Reggae is here with Chilean band Gondwana
Submitted by Rocksario on Tue, 2011-09-06 09:01
United Reggae Magazine recently wrote that “Gondwana is a delight to the sense with spirit moving falsetto notes, bubbling bass, hard drums, tight horns and guitars with the ability to move with ease in a sound ranging from calypso to hard rock.” This description of the Chilean reggae band is spot on; Gondwana will definitely delight all of your senses.
Reggae is a genre typically associated with Jamaica; however, the Bob Marley influence reached South America and has made a lively home there with bands like Los Pericos, Fabulosos Cadillacs, and Gondwana. Since 1987, Gondwana, has brought forth a unique blend of Latin and Jamaican rhythms evidenced by their successful albums such as “Second Coming, “Made in Jamaica”, Aire de Jah”, among many others. Gondwana typically sings about love, and societal and spiritual issues.
With over 24 years of history, the band has toured the world performing in some of the most prestigious festivals and stages including “Bob Marley Day, SummerFest, and Quilmes Rock” festival.
Their popularity is astounding when you consider that they have primarily diffused their music independently using the internet and their popular YouTube channel. Some of their official videos have over 45 million views such as “Mi Princesa”, “Sentimiento Original”, and “Felicidad”.
Gondwana is a resilient band that has survived many years in an industry that commonly under represents Latin alternative bands. Nevertheless, Gondwana’s hard work of promoting every show using their You Tube channel to send out invitations to their many fans, and their down-to-earth demeanor has gotten them where they are today.
Recently Gondwana, parted ways with vocalist Maxi Vargas and named their new singer as MC Jona (their 9th singer). Their current tour of the USA includes both east and west coast shows, as well as, some first time appearances in the south. This is their first US tour in over 11 years.
Gondwana has participated in many recent compilations including a Tribute to Bob Marley, and participated in a Los Pericos album (Pericos & Friends, 2010). They also recently released a new album “Pincoya Calipso” which features two new songs along with re-released versions of some of their most popular hits. Gondwana recently concluded tours of Mexico and Europe.
Current Gondwana members include I -Locks (bass), MC Jona (vocals), Yayo Loyola (drums), Leo Dread (percussion, vocals), Pancho Contreras (trumpet), Keno Fingaman (keyboard), Hugo Prado (trombone), Gato Ramos (saxophone) y Pez López (guitar). They will be performing on 9/7/11 here at the State Theater along with local favorites Nayas, and Kickoman. Reggae, rock, and ska await, this is definitely a show not to be missed!

Zoé deleita a todos sus fans en concierto del State Theater VA
Submitted by Rocksario on Fri, 2011-08-19 13:13
<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

On the Lookout: Vicente García
Submitted by e.flores on Tue, 2011-07-19 13:25On the Lookout: Vicente García

I must admit, I have been out of touch for some time now with up and coming talents in the Latin market. Suffice to say, last Thursday July 14, I was more than caught up to speed on who to keep an eye out for. If you are like me, you probably recognize Vicente as the opening act for Maná's U.S. portion of their Drama Y Luz World Tour. If not, you may recognize him as the newest and most talked about talent emerging from the Dominican Republic.
Vicente at the age of 27, has toured with Juan Luis Guerra, collaborated with artists like Ximena Sariñana and Cultura Profética. His album Melodrama has been praised by critics thanks much in part to the album's exploration and search to defy traditional melodies consistent with albums of the Tropical genre. This album is a harmonious blend of jazz and bachata along with a dash of Vicente's influences from the Motown sounds. Imagine melodies reminiscent of Stevie Wonder and a Latin percussion flair added with a harmonious voice singing lyrics written with wit, heart and flavor. If you can imagine that, then my friends, there you have Vicente García.
According to the biography provided by his website (http://www.vicentegarciamusic.com), Vicente's
musical training has been almost completely self-taught, “When I was little I went to elementary music school, and I was also part of the school choir and stuff like that, but I never dedicated myself to a specific instrument. The guitar I learned on my own, a little bit of piano, I play the ukulele, a little bongo, some maracas, but have no orthodox training. Independently, I took classes in harmony; I read many books about music, about composition, about harmony… I’ve educated myself. ”
According to him, he has spent half of his life writing songs. “When I was little I was always clear about wanting my parents to buy me musical instruments, I had my first drum set when I was four and I set it on the balcony to play to the people passing by and I always had that proximity to the instruments and the music but then when I entered into adolescence I doubt myself and stay away from it for a while. The first instrument I learned to play well was the guitar and I was about 12, just before I started to write songs.” But even he admits his evolution as a composer, “I think I’ve changed a lot. I started writing very generic songs with lots of cliché and I think that the evolution of a songwriter consists in allowing yourself to try other things.”
Currently, Vicente has no solo scheduled appearances in the U.S. aside from the tour dates with Maná. None the less, his album Melodrama is available in stores and on iTunes for download. His standout tracks on this record for me are Mi Balcón and Agualluvia. Catchy, witty, and remind me of the sounds of life back in Puerto Rico. Homesick? Maybe. But that's the power that good music can have on the listener.
Give him a try, you will be surprised with this very refreshing and inspiring fusion blend of genres and culture. Republica Dominicana has more than enough reasons to be proud of this young talent. I'm sure we will be seeing much more of him in the years to come.

A call to all DC Hispanics: Maná plays the Patriot Center
Submitted by e.flores on Mon, 2011-07-18 11:30A call to all DC Hispanics: Maná plays the Patriot Center
Last Thursday, July 14, the Washington Metro area was visited by one of the most important and successful bands in Spanish rock history, Maná. The sold-out Patriot Center was transformed into an assembly of Latin American countries. Flags from numerous countries were proudly waved, all the attending –particularly the women- were dressed out to the nines and ready for a night of delight and enjoyment.
The show began to the tunes of the Dominican singer/songwriter, Vicente Garcia and his band. Como Has Logrado, Agualluvia, and Mi Balcón were his musical offerings to a warm receiving crowd at the venue.
A massive stage and mesh screen covered the setup and functioned as a surface on which stars, hearts, and clouds were projected on, all while the Mexican quartet made their way to the stage to the sounds of Lluvia al Corazón. Much to everyone’s surprise, the next two songs were golden classics for any Maná fan. Oye Mi Amor and De Pies a Cabeza brought everyone to their feet cheering and belting wholeheartedly to the tune of these two songs.
The show progressed and somehow the energy within the band, particularly lead singer Fher Olvera, seemed to dwindle. Maybe it was the high expectations I had for this show, maybe it was my level of fanaticism noticing things not obvious to the normal attendee, or maybe it was just me seeing things, but it seemed as though the boys were running low on steam and the first half of the show was more of a dressed rehearsal than the actual live performance. Plagued with technical difficulties at times, it was obvious that their frustration was also taking a toll on the performance.
Regardless, they marched on and offered a rather varied selection of songs and screen projections including a rising platform that elevated drummer Alex “El Animal” Gonzalez, up almost ten feet in the air. For me, the call to arms came to the tune of Latinoamérica. All of us who took our flags to the show stood and proudly sang for our people, for our struggles and for our nations.
The second half of the show got a second wind during the acoustic performance relocated to the second stage at the back of the venue. This portion revamped everyone’s energy and it truly became a giant intimate sing along.
Upon their return to the mane stage they sang Como Te Deseo, Dejame Entrar and Clavado En Un Bar with which they left the stage to a roaring crowd. Labios Compartidos and En El Muelle de San Blas were their departing songs to the 10,000 present on Thursday night.
All in all, the show was a multi-generational gathering that transformed the Patriot Center into a cultural melting pot united by the history and progression Maná always offers their faithful.
